Rehabilitation in practice Cerebellar ataxia: pathophysiology and rehabilitation

نویسنده

  • Jon Marsden
چکیده

Cerebellar dysfunction may result in significant functional difficulties with upper and lower limb movement, oculo-motor control, balance and walking. Such difficulties can affect employability, increase carer burden and reduce a person’s perceived quality of life. The economic burden of people with spinocerebellar ataxia is estimated to be around E18 776 per annum. This article will review the signs and symptoms and pathophysiology of cerebellar ataxia, highlighting the theoretical basis of current non-surgical and nonpharmacological rehabilitation techniques.

Erratum to “Effect of Long-Term Climbing Training on Cerebellar Ataxia: A Case Series”

Background. Efficient therapy for both limb and gait ataxia is required. Climbing, a complex task for the whole motor system involving balance, body stabilization, and the simultaneous coordination of all 4 limbs, may have therapeutic potential. Objective. To investigate whether long-term climbing training improves motor function in patients with cerebellar ataxia. Methods. Four patients suffer...

Gait ataxia--specific cerebellar influences and their rehabilitation.

It is well known that the cerebellum is important for movement control and plays a critical role in balance and locomotion. As such, one of the most characteristic and sensitive signs of cerebellar damage is gait ataxia. However, characterizing ataxic gait is no easy task, because gait patterns are highly variable. This variability seems to result from the interaction of different factors, name...

[Neurorehabilitation for spinocerebellar degeneration].

It remains to be elucidated whether there is a use- or dose-dependent effect of rehabilitative intervention on impairment and disability of spinocerebellar degeneration since the disease progressively damages cerebellar structure that plays a crucial role in motor learning. Moreover there is a trade-off between functional improvement after rehabilitation and functional deterioration due to dise...

Rehabilitation for Ataxia Following Chemotherapy for Burkitt Lymphoma Involving the Rectum

Burkitt lymphoma is a type of B-cell lymphoma that occurs mostly in children, and rarely in adults. The sporadic type is known to occur mostly at the ileum and cecum. Cytarabine, which is used for central nervous system prophylaxis during chemotherapy for Burkitt lymphoma, has known neurotoxicity, and its side effects include motor ataxia due to cerebellar injury, ataxic dysarthria, dysfunction...
